7th Grade Social Studies
Course Outline
Unit 1
Jacksonville, Illinois
The students will explore the rich history of Jacksonville, Illinois, including the first settlers, the early struggles in Jacksonville, how Jacksonville earned the nickname, "Athens of the West" and will examine how Jacksonville grew into a thriving city.
Unit 2
French and Indian War
The students will study the French and Indian War, including the important people and events of the conflict.
Unit 3
British Acts and Taxes
The students will examine the breakdown in the relationship between the American Colonists and Great Britain after the conclusion of the French and Indian War. They will learn about the events that will lead to the American Revolution.
Unit 4
American Revolution
The students will study the American Revolutionary War and the events that led to the birth of the United States of America.
Unit 5
United States Constitution
The students will explore the birth of our government from the Articles of Confederation to the United States Constitution, including Articles I, II, III, and the Amendments to the Constitution.
Unit 6
Westward Expansion
The students will study how the people of the United States of America expanded westward towards the Pacific Ocean.
Unit 7
Civil War
The students will examine the causes of the Civil War, and will examine the fight between the North and South during the Civil War. The course will end at the end of the Civil War and the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
